The Greatest Surfing Couple,
They were called the Greatest Couple
by the guys who ride the sea
The greatest guy and girl
And if a vote were taken,
it's for sure that they would win
She would ride upon his shoulders
At dusk they'd walk together
Always do that word as one
They laughed and loved together
From dawn till day was done
The greatest serf and couple of them all
And on that fateful Saturday,
the beach was mobbed and loud
The greatest surfin' couple
was about to please the crowd
A gaping throng was gathered
The greatest surfin' couple
was about to shoot the pier
The day was clear and sunny,
the surf was rough and high,
that made their board begin to fly.
They raced between the pilings
as they're watching people cheer,
then the greatest surfing
had I ever seen an ocean made of
At least a thousand surfers
had gathered with their boards,
and the ocean's roar was hushed
as not a ripple moved ashore.
The surfers paddled slowly
in procession by the pier
And each in turn paid tribute
to their friends no longer here
A stripe of black across each board
and each had a flowered way
They placed upon the water
Somehow it seemed so long ago,
though it's just a year today.
And I went back to the spot
the greatest couple passed away.
It was strange that on this special day,
the sea was still unclear.
And I saw two flowered leis
from underneath the pier.
