In a display about the First World War
from the gold that was worn?
I bought that thing and I took it home
I tried it on when I was alone
I looked in the mirror, I saw 1916
The men that were there and what they
For that bit of gold I paid fifty pound
In a pocket loaded an old note I found
From years gone by, a long time dead
A note from the soldier, this is what it read
The dissonance found and I am no more
and I'm for the great war
I saw hell on earth and man become beast
I heard the screaming from north, and east
I smelt the death, I felt the pain
A war to end wars, never again
Saw the fear in grown men's eyes
In poison fields the young boys died
kept the thoughts in my head
Who will have victory over the
Whoever fights the snow, tell my family
I love them all for eternity
To my wife Mary Ann, you must be strong
For I first born, my only son Tom
A time gone by from World War I
A soldier's words written from the sun
A no -promise soldier on his fatal day
Lest we forget, they won't grow old
Those who stepped forward
To fight a war some didn't understand
I learned a lot from that dirty old coat
A soldier's farewell written on a note
For fu ture generations and a way of life
