one morning when the sun was shining,
wondering if she'd change at all
if her hair was still red.
Her folks said our lives together
sure was going to be rough.
They never did like mama's

I was standing at the side of my road
Rain falling into my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows I paid some dues
She was married when we first met,
but it was a little too much for her
We drove that car as far as we could,
Spilled it up on the dark sat night,
She turned around to look at me
I heard her say over her shoulder,

I had a job in the Greek north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
Never did like it all that much
One day the axe just fell,
I drifted down into Orleans
working on a fishing boat
All the while I was alone,
the past was close behind
I've seen a lot of women,
but they never escaped my mind
