I guess you could
call it a roadside attraction
With a sign that blinked
cold beer off Highway 5
Gas pumps, cigarettes,
groceries, and rednecks
With a run down old dance hall
with laughter in side
Walked in on high heels
I was wearing for the first time
Acting like thirty, going on fifteen
Red neon signs and danger
Mixed with the blue eyes of a stranger
The jukebox played a slow one,
and I danced in his arms
He told me I sure did sound country
He said to me that I look way out of place
He asked me what I'd like
to believe in
And his Buick with Tennessee plates
I guess you could call it
a six dollar motel
On the wrong side of Memphis
in the Arkansas dawn
Dingy old curtains
and the stale smell of bourbon
I woke up and reached for him but
he was gone
I cried all the way to some bar
down the highway
Where that honky -tonk music
called out to me
Red neon signs and danger
and this time a brown -eyed stranger
I knew what he was thinking
and I knew what he'd say
He told me I sure did sound coun try
He says to me that I look way out of place
And he'd ask if I'd like
to be leav in'
In his Chevy with Alabama plates
Now a million miles and twenty years later
I think of all the love that's come and gone
So take it from a woman
who has seen it all
You just can't make a motel a home
They all told me I sure did sound country
They told me that I looked
way out of place
They all asked me if I'd like to be leaving
