A ragtag little girl
with big blue eyes
and golden hair
Barely standing three feet
above the ground
Dancing for her hand out
at the Crockett County Fair
She'd a spell on
everyone around
Everybody called her Penny Annie
She'd dance for a penny or for free
If Annie had been any
older then
I bet a penny I'd have taken
Annie home with me
Years went by and she became
a legend at the fair
Dancing for a penny or for free
Then one year she didn't appear
and no one knew just why
Now the Crockett County Fair
ain't what it used to be
Then one night I saw her name
on a flashin' neon sign
Sayin' Penny had it dan
cin' just for you
She was showin' off her womanhood
During the bump and grind
And I can't say that I enjoyed the
view
Now she works lying on her back
Dancing to a different tune
Doing one -hour stands
With any man she finds
She shoots away the pain
But then it comes again too soon
She's paying the fiddler
who's been fiddling with
her mind
Her body and mind
Didn't anybody ever tell you, Annie
If you dance,
pay the man who plays the tune
The dancing is fun,
but when the dancing's done
But sometimes you find you dance
with every devil in the room
Everybody called her Penny An nie
She'd dance for a penny or for free
If Annie had been any older then
And I, I bet a penny
I'd have taken Annie home with me
Dear God, I'm wishing I had taken
Annie home with me
With me you
