King
Arthur and
Merlin
Once
upon
a
time,
in
a
land far
away,
lived a young
boy called
Arthur
and
a knight,
Sir
Kay.
Though
Arthur
was
poor,
he
was clever
and
bright,
and
dreamed
every
day
of
becoming a
knight.
Sir
Kay, on
the other hand,
was
grumpy
an
d mean,
the
most
miser
able knight
there
ever
had
been.
He worked
Ar
thur
hard all
day
and all
night,
and
never ever
let
him out
of his sight.
One day,
the pair
rode to
an old
English
town
to
compete
in a
contest for
the
best
knight
around.
All
the
riders were there,
with their horses
and
lan
cers.
But
Sir
Kay
just laughed.
He
fan
cied
his chances.
Then riding
his
horse to
the edge
of the
field,
young
Arthur
helped
Kay
into
armour
an
d shield.
But
then,
Arthur
gasped.
Oh
no!
Oh
my lord!
I'm
terribly
sorry!
I've
forgotten
your
sword!
You
dolt!
cried
Sir
Kay.
You'd
better
find
me one
fast,
or
else
this
year
contest
may
well
be
your
last.
An
d giving
young
Arthur
a clip
round
the ear,
he
sen
t the
boy off with
his
eyes full
of tears.
Up
set and
afraid,
Arthur
ran round
all
day to
look for
a sword
to take back
to
Sir
Kay.
But
try
as
he might,
his
long
search
was in
vain,
for
all
the
sword makers
had
gone
to the
games.
As
Arthur
turned
back,
he
caught a glint
in
the air
from
a
strange
shiny
object
that
stood in
the square.
A
sword
in
a stone,
like
the tales
of old,
with
a
blade
of
pure
sil
ver and
a handle
of
gold.
Arthur
stretched
out
a hand,
and
with
a heave
and a
ho,
he
pulled the
gold sword
right
out
of
the stone.
He
then held
it aloft
in
a
great
beam of
light.
It
was truly
a
sword
that was
fit for
a knight.
Then
the town's
mayor, who
was just
passing by,
stopped
dead in his
tracks an
d let out
a cry.
He
pulled
the sword
from the stone.
I saw,
it
was him!
He shall
be our new
ruler.
Long live
the king!
With
a flash
and a
bang,
the wizard
Merlin
appeared,
with his pointy
blue
hat and
long
silver
beard.
That
sword
is
Excalibur.
It
was
trapped in
the stone,
an
d he
who removes
it shall
sit on
the throne.
As a
cheer
went up
from the fast -growing
crowd,
Sir
Kay pushed
to the
front and
shouted
out
loud,
Move away
quick,
you
scruffy
young
sprout!
The king's
sword is mine,
now
I'll pull it
out!
But
though
Sir
Kay grunted
and twisted
and tugged,
the
sword in
the stone just
would
not
budge.
And then
as
Kay stopped,
all
tired and
faint,
Arthur grabbed
the stuck
sword and
drew it
again.
Huzzah!
yelled the crowd
as
they led him through town,
and later
that day
gave him
a crown.
While
Merlin
just smiled
and shut
Arthur a
wink
For
long had
he known this
boy would
be king
King
Arthur lived
well in
his castle
of
white
With
a round table
and
Merlin
and
plenty
of knights
A
great
many children
now
know of
his
name
And
know
he lived
happily till
the
end of his
reign
