When the phone would ring,
as a kid I recall
My brothers and I would race down the hall
It never rained twice
when Daddy was out on the road
Being the oldest, I'd usually win
They'd stand around asking me,
is it him?
I remember how Mama's face glowed
When I let everyone know
He's on the way home,
his work is through
He said to hold on, he'll be here soon
He's been counting the days,
and he's been gone way too long
Now he's on the way home
And just like us kids, time moved on
Look at me now, I got kids of my own
And it's hard to believe
Mama's been gone
three years
Be ing the oldest, I got the call today
Saying that daddy had just passed away
In my heart I know mama could hear
As I whispered through my tears
He's on the way home, his work is through
Mama, hold on,
he'll be there soon
He's been counting the days
and you've been gone
Way too long
But he's on the way home
Oh, staring out the window
At the sunrise
It's like I'm looking into Mama's eyes
And standing here in the glow
It's like she's telling
me she knows
He's on the way home,
his work is through
Mama, hold on, he'll be there soon
He's been counting the days
And you've been
gone way too long
He's been countin' the days,
and you've been gone
way too long
Now he's on the way home you
