He took
all his old love letters
and he bound them all together
But I know he knew what every letter said
A picture and a gold band
he took from off his old hand
And then he drew a little sign that read
Here lies the heart of Amos Brown
And he dug a little hole
there in the ground.
One by one he kissed his treasures
as he slowly laid them down,
saying here lies the heart
of Amos Brown.
Pretty soon he planted flowers,
and I've seen him sit for hours
Just staring at that little patch of clay
How much he must have loved her,
how much he must have suffered
For I know he told the truth
each time he'd say
Here lies the heart of Amos Brown
And they laughed behind his back
all over town
The old man who put his memories
in a box deep in the ground
Saying here lies the heart of
Amos Brown
The story was, a rounder
Had passed through town and found her
And before anybody knew it,
he'd stolen her away
The old man never found another,
and he died still loving my mother.
And it broke my heart to
hear my daddy say,
Here lies the heart of Amos Brown.
And I doubt a sadder story can be found
Than the old man who put his memories
in a box deep in the ground
Saying here lies the heart of Amos Brown
