if He saw Christmas today?
Would he be impressed with all the stuff,
the biggest gifts that aren't enough?
Or would he shake his head
and say they don't get it yet?
The only gift that was underneath
the tree where Jesus died
Was the gift of grace he left
with the ribbons loosely tied
There were ornaments of silver nails
and a tinsel crown of thorns
But pretty much that was it,
except the love of our Lord
by that Christmas tree on a hill
There were no sparkly lights
If you walk where Jesus walked
We carried bags and packages
We see Santa Claus in red and white
Candy canes with cheerful stripes
But the stripes that Jesus had
Were the ones upon His back
And the only gift that was underneath
the tree where Jesus died
There were ornaments of silver nails
and a tinsel crown of thorns.
But pretty much that was it
By that Christmas tree on a hill
So why should I have a brighter tree
More majestic than my King?
Grace is such a simple thing
The only gift that was underneath
The tree where Jesus died
What's the gift of grace he left?
We just gotta look inside
Those ornaments of silver nails
Held the sin I'm guilty for
An d he knew about all of this
For that Christmas tree on a hill
At that Christmas tree on
